The following is a synopsis of his lecture:
A good school has four attributes: 1. It is where the learning of learning take place, 2. Where the joy of learning takes place. 3. There is discovery of beauty and the adventure of thinking. 4. Where young people learn that it pays to develop iniative in this world.
“The biggest asset a nation can make is education. We must regain education as the kemal of our society. Every five years there is complete change, complete renewal. The jobs that are now won’t be here in five years. Without learning, our young people can’t survive. We teachers get all moldy and after 20 years, we should be forbidden to teach. We should go work in the real world or go to university.”
“One of the greatest challenges of our time is that the media educates more than the teacher. I was talking to the chancellor of Education of Germany last week who said We can try to balance the power of the media by nurturing the children for half the day. This is the cold war of education.”
The teacher, he said is a midwife to the iniation into individuality. Iniation means to begin, to bring to life. The student is a novice, a beginner. Intative is to have the courage to begin something. “I hope we teachers stay as students always. I want to become different than before. I want to keep growing.”
