Racing into history...
When Colonial Downs opened in New Kent County on Sept. 1,1997, shown above, both horsemen and fans chedred the advent of pari-mutuel racing in the Old Dominion. The track will host standardbred trotters and pacers at a race meet this spring, with the second thoroughbred meet planned for late summer. In addition to the regular fare of races on the dirt track will be a plethora of contests on the acclaimed turf course. Steeplechasing will join flat racing on the ‘largest turf course in America' with two races planned per week in a Saratoga-style menu of jump racing. National Steeplechase Association handicapper and racing secretary Bill Gallo said that the level of conditions for the steeplechases at Colonial Downs will range from stakes to claimers.
