Wastewater committee chairman Charlie Tompkins received statistical and graphical data from the September health department sanitation survey. Narrative analysis is pending. Seventy-nine percent of the 110 households and businesses visited completed the surveys. Soggy or mushy ground, obnoxious odors and slow-draining or sluggish toilets were the most reported complaints.
Five owners reported sewage surfacing over their drainfields. Based on the survey input, Tompkins’ committee will evaluate and recommend a firm to proceed with the previously advertised engineering feasibility study. Bids range from roughly $6,000 to $20,000. Tompkins received a handful of applications from town property owners for low-interest state loans to replace failing wastewater disposal systems. Unfortunately, said Tompkins, the town actually receives the funds and then manages the loans locally, so the state requires submission of a complete operation plan. The council was notified too late to take action for this year, but Tompkins will continue to pursue the project.
