to its roots
Old fashioned pointto-point racing takes competitors back to the very roots of steeplechasing as a sport. In 1752 Ireland, two game foxhunters raced each other literally from point to point - from where they were to the visible church steeple. History does not record the winner, but even today the question of “whose horse is faster” remains unanswered.
For riders interested in taking part in the most true-to-history division of racing, there are two old fashioned races planned on this year’s point-to-point calendar. The March 22 Rappahannock Hunt old fashioned and the April 5 Orange County Hunt old fashioned are a miniseries of their own for the Ruhsam memorial trophy.
