five-week break since his last start, and win, in last November’s Colonial Cup, grade I, in South Carolina. A March 1 flat race prep is scheduled at Great Meadow in The Plains. Miller is a great believer in easy preps for the 10-year-old: Lonesome Glory won a mile and a half flat prep at Great Meadow in 1995 before going on the win that year’s Colonial Cup, and he did the same last year. In 1993, Lonesome prepped by winning on the flat at Foxfield before taking that year’s Breeders’ Cup ‘chase.
Virginian Gus Brown, who rides for Miller, contacted Great Meadow founder Arthur Arundel to coordinate the prep race. “Bruce is very superstitious,” said Brown. “He likes to stick with what works, and he knows that Great Meadow has worked well for the horse in the past as a prep for a big effort.”
The race will be set at two miles, probably at 4 p.m., and will be opened to eight or 10 other starters. A $2,000 purse, sponsored by the “friends of Lonesome Glory”
