An enthusiastic group of Rappahannock residents took a bus trip to Richmond on Monday, Jan. 17 to be part of “Lobby Day”, an effort organized by the Virginia Coalition for Public Education, of which the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee is a member.
The primary goal of the group was to lobby against the tuition tax credit legislation which has been introduced in the current legislative session.
The group was able to meet with Delegate Jay Katzen, the sponsor of the tuition tax credit bill (House Bill 68). Delegate Katzen was generous with his time, spending 45 minutes with the group in what was an open and at times, heated debate. The concern voiced most often was that this bill would have an adverse impact on public education in Virginia, especially in Rappahannock, because it would reduce the already limited funds for public education. Delegate Katzen argued that his legislation would improve the public schools. Neither side appeared to be swayed, and the meeting ended amicably.
