Wakefield Country Day School girl’s junior varsity and boy’s varsity teams had decisive victories over Wakefield, Inc., Marshall, on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at WCDS.
Mandeb Judd of Front Royal and sMaureen Dale of Luray, both ninth graders, led the scoring attack in soundly defeating Wakefield, Inc. 45-9. The Lady Owls opened up a large lead in the first half and never stopped.
The team has shown increasing improvement over the season and has worked hard to keep their winning streak alive. Dale, Whitney Mathews of Flint Hill and Katie Guiffre of Huntly played a great defensive game with strong rebounds.
Jung Min Lee of Flint Hill and Judson Hurlbert of Linden led the scoring attack for the Owls in an exciting boy’s varsity contest which ended in a 54-46 victory for WCDS. Wayne Beatty of Luray, and Yenan Boya and Connor Hammelman of Warrenton each chipped in with nine points. WCDS started out strong, opening with a 14-point lead before losing players to foul trouble. Wakefield, Inc. closed the gap to four points before WCDS pulled ahead by eight in the final two minutes of play.
The WCDS Lady Owls continued their winning streak on Friday defeating Colonial Beach 36-10, with Dale scoring 31 points and Judd scoring five points. Once again the defensive effort by the entire team was outstanding. JV coach, Jim Dale of Luray, stated, “We are primarily a defensive team, that hopes to outscore the opponent before the game is over. The girls are doing a great job.”
