Conservation
Is sprawl awareness sweeping into
the Statehouse?
The legislation promoted last year by the
Conservation Land Coalition and supported by
the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors might bode well for the future of the Old Dominion. This legislation would, for the first time, establish a public fund for land conservation, and would allocate $40e million per year from the funds generated by the State recordation tax. These would not be new funds nor require new taxes, but would be a reallocation of money already collected by the Commonwealth.
These funds would be used by the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation, in part through grants to local governments, to preserve and protect open spaces, agricultural land, natural areas, and historic , sites. Forty million dollars per year may not save all " of Virginia’s open spaces and important historic sites, but would certainly help and, perhaps, might serve to increase the awareness of the public and our legislators to the importance of such preservation.
Rappahannock County too could use such help, for where else in Virginia might one find a county so well worth preserving. Let’s encourage our representatives to support this legislation, and let’s bring some of those land conservation funds home!
