I live on Route 615, Castleton Ford Road. I, like the majority
of Castleton residents, who live on this road must travel the unsafe Route 615 Castleton Ford Road section daily. We would very much like spot repairs and road improvements performed.
This nine tenths mile section is beyond maintenance and does need improvements before it can be safely maintained. At present the road has been improved and surface treated on both ends leaving this short hazardous section in the middle.
If the writer of the article to the editor on Jan. 12, had researched or even cared enough he would have attended the Board of Supervisors meeting. The writer would have known that there is a petition, with 50 plus signatures of Castleton community residents.
These signatures are of residents who either live on or must use this hazardous section of Castleton Ford Road.
This petition was not referring to Route 615 Turkey Ridge Road. The particular section discussed has a very sharp dangerous narrow curve with a steep embankment and a blinding no line of site for oncoming traffic. It also has a very narrow road surface with deep ditches and is impassable without stopping and trying to maneuver oncoming traffic without being crowded in the deep ditches with no shoulders.
Some of us care about the life safety of our family members and others. However, there are many who could care less for others life safety or property and never attempt to slow down, but see how far they can force you off the road.
As far as the road improvements causing additional speeds believe me the speed is already there. At least with the improvements the safe driver wouldn’t have to repeatedly be forced in a ditch and have a shoulder to stop on safely.
The main reason the county has remained in its present state is the fact of our excellent Comprehensive planning and excellent decision making of our Board of Supervisors. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Bob Anderson to represent us in the Hawthorn District who airs on the side of life safety, but still strives to preserve the scenic visual enjoyments of county residents. .
I, too as a landowner in Rappahannock am committed to protecting our scenic views and keeping development to a minimum however, not at the cost of a life. I have also worked in public safety for 27 years and very much committed to the life safety of others. For this reason my neighbor and I are both donating the majority of land to VDOT for the needed improvements.
Road improvements will not increase roadside trash as suggested. However, the gentlemen who wrote tl^p article should spend his time trying to keep the community dump site open at Scrabble. He can bet that as soon as this is closed the trash will increase on the roadsides. Especially on these secondary unimproved roads where the violators can easily dump without being detected due to hearing anyone approaching in the gravel sections and very poor line of site.
