“Excellent!”, “Creative!”, “Refreshing!”, were just a few of the comments used to describe the ninth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebration held at The Theatre on Sunday, Jan. 16.
A near capacity crowd was entertained through the presentation of an original play entitled “A Dream Beyond Freedom” written and directed by Mary Tinsley of Madison County.
Tinsley also portrays one of the major roles, which is one of a pair of sisters who reminisce about the life and times of King. The other sister is played by Tinsley’s real-life sister, Georgiana Turner of Culpeper.
Tinsley wrote the play for the Drama Ministry in the two churches she works in; Swift Ford and Mt. Zion, both in Criglersville, where Rev. Arthur Green is the pastor of both.
Rev. Green was on hand Sunday evening and stated that the Drama Ministry provides the opportunity for the youth of the church to express themselves- in a positive manner while also educating and enlightening others who see their performances. Green stated, “I’ve seen this play each of the three times it was given; even when I know what’s going to happen, and I’m still touched with emotion each time.”
The sisterly team of Tinsley and Turner are truly a dynamic duo. Besides having a natural instinct to play off of each other, they also have a natural instinct for what plays with an audience.
While providing the historical background during the civil rights movement, this play was the first time for this writer to experience it in a most amusing way.
