we never discovered gold or oil or coal here, and we haven’t been discovered, so far, by Bill Gates or Steve Case.
We were also blessed with some far-sighted and caring people, such as the county leaders who shaped our zoning ordinances in the 1960s and the activist like Phil Irwin and Mitzie Young who founded the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection to beat back those who would have put such blights as high-voltage power lines, ski lodges, and Disneyland in our back yards.
So we have been lucky. But how long can our luck last? I believe that luck won’t be enough to hold back the tidal wave that is sweeping over the region on all sides, Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier, Culpeper counties. Our turn will be next. I just don’t know how soon “next” will arrive.
Maybe it will be the y»ear 2000. Certainly it will come in the decade ahead. If we are to have any chance to preserve what we love about Rappahannock County, now is the time to get organized and get ready to defend it. That is why I think the year 2000 must be a year of rethinking and renewal for all organizations and people in this county who are willing to fight to prevent us from being Fairfaxed and V-DOTed into oblivion.
We of RLEP hope to use the year ahead to educate ourselves and others on the issues facing the county. We hope to expand our membership, and energize our members into action. We need the help and support of all people who are concerned about preserving the beauty, tranquility and rural way of life we enjoy in Rappahannock County.
