Back in the days of the ancient Romans, the wedding cake (if that’s even the correct term) was used to symbolize the blushing bride’s fertility. They were made out of wheat and barley and were broken over the bride’s head. If the cake broke over the lucky lady’s head, that meant she was fertile and could expect some little ones in about nine months.
