Forget carriages and hunt party themes. When it comes to an equestrian wedding, nothing beats a few hardfought chukkers, a bilingual exchange of oaths, and an Argentine asado to seal a match made in polo heaven.
Daniel Tognini, formerly of Argentina by way of Switzerland, Belgium, Malaysia and Palm Beach, one of Polo Great Meadow’s stalwart pros, had cast his eye on lawyer Ilene Harrison a little over two years ago.
Harrison, artist and bon vivant at heart, had lived a gypsy existence as well before going to law school and settling down in Virginia.
She had been drawn to the excitement of polo in The Plains and arranged for lessons with Argentine pro Rodrigo Salinas. She showed up, Salinas didn’t. Contrived or not, Tognini, always in the right place at the right time, swooped in for the interception.
Acknowledged a perfect caballero both on and off the field, Tognini is uncharacteristically quiet and circumspect for an Argentine — a perfect foil for the vivacious and outgoing Harrison.
