Hampton, Va. was the romantic site on Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, for the nuptials of Doretha Howard Butler of Williamsburg and Mr. Michael Leron White of Dayton, Ohio. The 5:30 p.m. candlelight ceremony was held on the historic campus of Hampton University at the Hampton Chapel, Rev. James Tabb, Jr. and Elder Ykethia Tabb, Manna Christian Fellowship, as the co-officiants of the double-ring ceremony.
The former Ms. Butler is the daughter of Mrs. Dorothy C. Butler of Sperryville and the late Howard H. Butler. Mr. White is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis White of Dayton, Ohio.
The bride was escorted by her uncle/godfather, Lewis S. Butler Sr. of Washington and given in marriage by her godparents and her mother.
She wore a formal, white, Italian silk, sleeveless, sheath-style gown with a detachable, cathedral-length train designed by Demetrios. The gown featured beading at the sweetheart neckline, the sleeve openings, the bodice and the edge of the train. The bride’s headpiece, worn previously by her mother and her sister for their weddings in 1953 and 1995, respectively, was refurbished by the bride’s sister and matron of honor, Mrs. Nanette Butler Roberts of Lignum.
