Phillip Thomas and Matthew Wolfe are the county’s newest Eagle Scouts.
They were approved for scouting’s highest rank on Nov. 16, by the Shenandoah Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. They were honored at the council’s annual recognition dinner for new Eagle Scouts on- Feb. 8 and will formally receive their awards at a local Troop 36 Court of Honor on Feb. 19.
The council recognition dinner, held on the 90th birthday of Boy Scouting in America, recognized a total of 50 Scouts attaining their award in 1999, the largest annual class in recent memory.
The scouts, their parents and leaders along with council leaders, were addressed by former Governor George Allen, who challenged the scouts to keep the lessons learned in scouting close to their hearts and minds throughout their lives and continue the practice of leaving any situation better than they have found it.
He reminded them that they would not always be able to control events in their lives, but that the circumstances they found themselves in were not as important as how they responded to them. He urged them to continue to be leaders, setting examples for Jill to see, and to truly soar as Eagles.
Phillip is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Thomas of Sperryville. He is a sophomore at Rappahannock County High School where he is a member of the Varsity Cross Country and Track Teams and a captain
