All this says to me that we need choice. We need educational opportunities that will fit the needs of our particular children. I exercised my “choice” for my children by moving to Rappahannock County where I knew that the public schools provided a better environment than those in and near Washington, D.C.
However, not everyone has the choice of being able to move to a better environment. The use of vouchers can provide this choice and lay the foundation for giving our children what they need.
Sadly, educational discipline is no longer merely a debate over which environment is best suited for the talents and skills of a particular child. Discipline has deteriorated to the point that the very safety of our children is at issue. It seems odd to me that people who call themselves “pro-choice” are opposed to providing a choice in education unless they just don’t understand the issues. Choice in education is about the safety of our children.
My children recently overheard me talking about the tragedy of Columbine. When my sixyear old overheard me talking about such schools, he said “I don’t want to go there!” I will tell you that my little six-year old is a precious guy, as are all my children. Will he someday be slain at the altar of someone’s political agenda for public education?
