To those of you opposed to tax vouchers, I would submit that the safety of my child cannot be compared to the sending of a package in the mail. If I don’t have enough money to pay extra for Federal Express, all I risk losing is a package, not a child.
The law does not require me to send packages, but it does require me to send my children to school. If I can’t afford a private school, I have no choice but to send my children to public school. If we have a school system that cannot secure the safety of its children, we have a moral obligation to do something about it.
If the government can no longer assure the safety of our children, it has no business being in the education business at all. The voucher system will cause the demise of public schools only where those schools have failed to provide the quality education that society desires and the quality environment that parents rightfully demand.
The federal government, with its faceless bureaucracy, is not going to save our children. It is time that we returned control over our children’s educational environment to parents, where it belongs.
The voucher system will do that, and I will support any plan that will help restore discipline and safety to the educational environment.
