Bob Scott of Castleton told me of a Hermit Thrush that was fighting its reflection at a window at his home. I would welcome this most sublime of all singers battling his reflection or doing anything else. This is the only thrush that winters in North America; other species in this family of splendid singers fly to the tropics in October.
As I was gazing out my study window, bemused and searching for the right word, a Hermit Thrush landed not two feet outside. I called for Lee, but the bird flew off before she saw it. We had frozen pokeberries in the freezer and these were put on the feeder. Did the thrush find them? I don’t know. Something did, for they disappeared.
A male Cardinal is perched just outside the window, reminding me to put out more seed. It is snowing again.
