The dean of students told us to look to our left and look to our right. He said that one out of three of us would not be sitting there on graduation day. He was right. I was thankful that I had been disciplined in high school so that I was not one of the casualties of that institution’s rigorous education environment.
I am the father of six children, and I currently have five who are in public school in Rappahannock. I believe that our school system is one of the best public school systems in the area. However, the public school system nationwide is required to accept all children, and I do not believe that any one school can be equipped to deal with the broad range of disciplinary issues that are encountered in such a system.
As the father of six children. I know that each child is unique. I have one child who belongs in a discipline that emphasizes academic excellence. I have another who belongs in a discipline that emphasizes creative expression.
There are children in public schools who come from broken homes and others who come from families where a parent is an alcoholic and/or abusive. They have special needs. If their special needs are not met, they also have the potential of being disruptive of other chil
