Walter Longyear should be ashamed of himself,
not only for his past support of bigots and felons such as Jesse Helms and Oliver North, but for his ignorant and harmful statements against Rappahannock families.
No doubt, however, most of your readers will find that their own families don’t fit Mr. Longyear’s small-minded and outdated view of the term. As the child of a single mother, I’m proud to inform him that I turned out just fine, as do many other children of single parent households.
As a gay man, I’m also proud to inform him that ‘family’ is no longer defined by man, woman and child, and it is definitely not defined by the tired and ineffective Christian ethic he so hatefully espouses.
