Raptors drawn to feeders are either Sharp-Shinned Hawks — smaller than a crow — or Cooper’s Hawks — about the size of a crow. Otherwise, the two are almost identical. These are fast, ferocious predators that zoom in and make a quick kill.
Our bird-watching telephone friend Jane West of Opal called to report a Red-breasted Nuthatch at her feeder. It is always a delight to hear from this witty and observant lady who says she watches birds "... when I am not out running my wheels or running my mouth.”
Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sheretz of Gid Brown Hollow also reported this tiny nuthatch at his feeder, along with a Brown Creeper that was feeding on his suet. Sheretz is a knowledgeable and perceptive observer; a lucky man to have the tiny creeper feeding on suet.
