Healthy People 2010 is the prevention agenda for the nation. It is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant, preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats.

It is a road map to better health for all and can be used by many different people, states, communities, professional organizations, and groups to improve health. The US Department of Health and Human Services established the goals.

They are:

1. Increase quality and years of healthy life.

2. Eliminate health disparities.

Twenty-eight focus areas have been established for individuals and groups to target their efforts. These include many areas of health care including heart disease, stroke, cancer and access to quality health care.

Along with Healthy People 2010 will be revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This spring the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2000 will be released.
