The Holiday Inn in Culpeper was the site on Feb. 8 for the luncheon meeting of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR.
The speaker , for the afternoon, introduced by Mrs. Betty Shackelford, was Mrs. Charles R. Haugh, Recording Secretary General, NSDAR.
For her topic, “Welcoming the New Millennium,” she went back to the past as examples of what can be done in the future. She honored those who had not only helped shape the DAR but also national life and specifically focused on Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee, a patriot and pioneer.
Joining the DAR in 1893 two and a half years after it was started, she became the DAR Surgeon General. In 1898, in that capacity, she recruited nurses from the DAR for the Spanish American War, which led to the organization of the Army Nurse Corps.
