1 Linda Butler came to Washington in March of 1991, when the former postmaster, Carol Miller, retired. Then on Jan. 11, 1992, Butler was appointed postmaster.
When asked if she would like to sit down for the interview, Butler replies, “We don’t usually sit down. We work here.”
; Almost 18 years ago, Butler began her career with the postal service as a part time flexible clerk in Sperryville. Afterwards, she was transferred to Boston as a clerk. Then, it was on to the Communications Corporation of America, which has a bulk mail plant that is run by the Boston post office.
Butler says, “We have a post office actually in the plant. They do tremendous lo£tds of bulk mail. Tractor trailer loads.” ” ’■ Butler has worked steadily for 18 years with the postal service. Needless to say, she eryoys her job. She says, “I’ve had a wide variety of experience doing different things.”
• She has worked all over Virginia as bulk mail technician, clerk and officer in charge at Boston, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Midland, and Banco.
But she did have another career at one time. She worked as a teacher’s aide for tbe TMR (trainably mentally retarded) program at Culpeper High School. » She lived in Culpeper all her life until she was married {o Paul Butler of jlappahannock County. They met at the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Scrabble as teenagers and became childhood sweethearts.
After they were married, the Butlers bought land in Rappahannock and built a house in 1963. They have three children who are married and live in Warrenton, Alexandria and New Jersey. They also have seven grandchildren, ranging from 16 to less than a year old.
