I recently saw a letter in the paper opposing the concept of school vouchers. I favor the i^se of school vouchers because it will give parents a “choice.” In the debate over public education, we have lost focus.

We need to understand, first and foremost, that the best education can be produced only in a proper learning environment, and a proper learning environment cannot be obtained Without a correct approach to discipline. ; Proper discipline is what produces excellence in sports programs. Proper discipline is what produces excellence in military units. The best musicians devote hours each day to their discipline. The same is true in the field of academics. Without proper discipline, all the money we spend on buildings, teachers, books ^nd programs is just being thrown away. ! My parents sent me to a private high school. Central to the school’s environment Was a “discipline” of excellence in academics. Misconduct was disruptive to academic excellence, and corporal punishment was utilized when necessary. We were teenage kids, and We pushed the limits; but we knew there was 4 consequence if we got caught misbehaving. Yes, we got away with things, but overall the discipline worked.
