Steeplechasing returns to Rappahannock County this Saturday, March 2, with the Rappahannock Hunt races at the Bleu Rock Inn course near Washington.
The first of at least 10 races begins at 12:30 p.m., with regular races scheduled over hurdles and timber and on the flat, in addition to races for juniors on ponies and a draft horse sprint.
New this year are "field master races," sanctioned by the North American Point-to-Point Association.
Unique in design, these races — one for seniors and one for juniors — are set at two miles over 12 timber fences, but riders must stay behind the "field master" until after the last fence. At that time, the master will release the field for the final 100yard dash to the finish line.
