They are also effective against mites, which are not controlled by most chemical insecticides. However, the oils would not be a good choice for infestations of large foliage eating beetles or caterpillars.
Oils are often promoted as being non toxic to beneficial insects, however, this is not entirely the case. If lady bug or lace wing larvae are feeding on a colony of aphids, an oil or soap treatment that contacts the beneficials will kill them just as dead as the aphids.
