Eric would love to see the myth that “food should be cheap” shift to a more realistic perspective, one that allows farmers to make a living.
“In America, we've been used to spending a small percentage of our annual income on food, which is unusual from the rest of the world. Our values are different - spending more on non-essential things instead of good food.”
Future of Waterpenny
We talked about their hopes for the future of the farm. Presently, Rachel and Eric are negotiating terms with Cliff Miller for the future of Waterpenny. One possibility is a long, 15 year or so lease, with the opportunity to work towards buying the farm. Setting up a land trust is another possibility that is being explored.
Rachel and Eric are eager to grow some perennial crops such as blueberries, apple varieties suitable for organic cultivation, raspberries and asparagus. Presently, they have taken over Joyce and (the late) Richard Abell’s asparagus patch. They also see having some chickens
