Both the couple and Cliff Miller are hoping for someone to work with part of the farm in this manner. Eric imagines success as owning the land, a house, having children and “lots of chickens!”.
As Rachel and Eric have gotten more settled in Rappahannock, their involvement with the community is growing, too. They enjoy hosting educational field trips and have been visited by RLEP’s Nature Camp, a Girl Scout Group and this year will participate in Headwater’s Summer Program. Home-schoolers are welcome, and anyone who wants to call ahead for a farm tour.
'■ Advice »
I wondered what advice they might have for aspiring farmers. Rachel answered, “Make sure that you have experience on a farm you like and have a good mentoring relationship with the person you learn from. Farming is a great way to live! It’s satisfying being in touch with the way seasons are moving and it feels good to provide people with food they might not he able to get. There are no office politics, no long, daily commutes, feelings of not contributing to the community- all the things that seem to get people down. We get to eat really well, too."
