The story centers on the monastery of Notre-Dame de l’Atlas, established in 1938 by French Catholic monks in the village of Tibhirine.

The monastery was known as a place of friendship between Muslims and Christians. In 1993, when the Algerian government intensified its war against Islamic terrorism, the monastery and the village initially escaped the violence that was raging in the mountains of the country.
