Rachel remembers telling her family that she wanted to be a farmer. Her grandmother said, “I don’t want you to do that. It’s a hard life, you don’t make enough money and you are always struggling.”
Rachel disagreed with her grandmother and popular belief, too.
“It isn’t true of a farm where you know your market and grow what you’re proud of. Farming requires a lot of intelligence and knowledge - farmers aren’t dumb.”
She and Eric have been demonstrating this to all the head-shakers.
Eric points out that “The myth is that farming doesn’t work as a business without subsidies or chemicals. Conventional models of farming don’t work if you’re disconnected from the consumer. Lots of ways of farming can work. When people think about farms, they usually don’t think about our kind: small-scale with direct marketing instead of commodity farming, which has no marketplace distinction.”
