After unsuccessful negotiations, the severed heads of the monks were found in a tree near the village. The bodies of the holy men were never found. They had paid the ultimate sacrifice, after having decided against leaving their monastery and the people that they served.
In telling the story, Mr. Kiser focuses on Brother Christian-Marie, the prior of the monastery. A former member of the French military serving in Algeria, he had returned to that country as a rponk to live in harmony with its Islamic people, whom he came to love. He believed that Christians and Muslims had much to learn from each other. The author examines the life of the monks at the monastery and their closeness with their Muslim neighbors, \ ho respected the seven as holy men of God.
