intern system
In addition, local farms are able to offer varieties of vegetables and fruits which don’t ship well, but are more flavorful and nutritious. Waterpenny Farm grows several such heirloom vegetables, starring beautiful tomatoes.
The intern system Rachel and Eric follow for additional farm help is fairly common practice for small farms throughout the U.S. and Europe. Interns, college students or graduates, arrive on May 1 and leave Nov. 1. Working five or five and a half days a week, they are paid a monthly stipend of $600, given rustic housing and work with and learn all aspects of the farm. What draws the interns to this arrangement is usually an interest in farming or gardening, testing out a rural, agricultural lifestyle or just becoming better informed consumers.
