well as a volunteer. She was a regular at the Rappahannock County Elementary School, Rappahannock Historical Society and the Rappahannock County Library.
The medical field was a natural for Mrs. Thornton. Both of her grandfathers were doctors in Rappahannock, Dr. William J. Smith of Sperryville and Dr. J.G. Brown of Woodville.
Mrs. Thornton was also very active in the Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church and served as its treasurer for a number of years.
Mrs. Thornton was also a member of the Community Services Board, Friends of Library Board, Education Advisory Board and was appointed the Piedmont District School Board member in 1991 to serve a remaining term.
In 1990, Mrs. Thornton was named the Rappahannock News Citizen of the Year.
She was married to Philip Lee Thornton Jr., who died in 1969.
