A regular schedule for harvesting, field work , delivering , and taking field trips to other farms is followed at Waterpenny. Two days of the week are market days, Saturday in Charlottesville and Sunday in Takoma Park, Md., where Rachel is the newly elected farmer’s market president.
One day a week is designated for local farm shares pickup and another day for dropping off shares in Northern Virginia, including to a food bank. There are deliveries to local restaurants, as well.
An informal farm stand opens in June, where whatever has been just picked is available for customers.
CSA program
Those customers who wish to join their CSA ( Community Supported Agriculture) program sign up in early spring, and pay a fiat fee ($375) for 22 weeks of a generous assortment of produce, which works out to less than $18 a week. For smaller families, half shares are available.
The CSA concept works well for people who like to try many different vegetables, eat a lot of fresh produce and who enjoy the regular contact with the farm. For people wanting to supplement their own gardens or get a large quantity of an item, the stand is a good option. A wide range of produce goes home with Waterpenny’s customers, from carrots and onions, to pumpkins and fall broccoli.
