When Cliff, Rachel and Eric got together, the young couple was a little skeptical at first. Also, that first year was too soon for them to start, being already into the season. The following year they were ready to take the leap. An agreement was negotiated between the parties, stipulating a two year trial period, with house and land rent-free. Rachel and Eric would make some improvements to the land and house, and rent tractors and equipment from Cliff, who also made some improvements to the house.
Rachel and Eric purchased a drip irrigation system, and water wheel transplanter, hired interns and netted a decent income the very first year, cultivating 12 acres of mixed vegetables.
I asked Cliff why he would want to do this, thinking of many other landowners that might balk at such an arrangement, that was clearly a gamble and an initial monetary loss.
