Last Tuesday, Rappahannock County lost a
great lady, Mrs. Frances Thornton. Mrs.
Thornton became Rappahannock County’s first public health nurse in 1950 and she faced a county filled with people who in too many cases were unaware of the importance of proper medical care, especially for children.
During her 36 years on the job, she started programs to teach parents the importance of proper medical care. She had first-hand experience with the problems of the small, rural county in which she grew up in and it gave her a head start as she organized what became, for many years, a onewoman health department.
Mrs. Thornton never met a stranger, she always had time to encourage a child, the time to speak to a parent, or lend a helping hand in whatever capacity that needed attention. Few people retain the great amount of “people skills” that Mrs.
