Abuse Shelter Training Set
The Women’s Abuse Shelter, Inc., of Culpeper will conduct its fall training course October 9,11,16 and 18, to coincide with Domestic Violence Week, October 7 through 13, according to a press release from the shelter.
The shelter, which is a non-profit organization, is in need of volunteers even though it is a United Way-supported agency, according to Deborah Simmons, media contact. “Volunteers can serve in a variety of wayB. We have a speakers’ bureau, publicity, shelter upkeep, ways and means and training committees that need volunteers,” she says. Simmons adds that people are needed to work directly with victims of spouse abuse, to drive clients to appointments and to staff the office.
Volunteers generally give 10 to 16 hours per month to duties at the shelter, according to Simmons. Volunteers are people from a wide spectrum of professions and walks of life, she notes. For information, call Rachael Saunders, services coordinator, at 347-1920 or 826-1847.
• Byrd Endorses Slaughter for 7th
Former U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr. has endorsed French Slaughter to succeed retiring Representative J. Kenneth Robinson as Seventh District Congressman, according to an October 2 press release from Slaughter campaign headquarters.
In his statement, Byrd said, "French Slaughter is one of the finest persons I have known. He has ability, courage, dedication and integrity.
“He is highly experienced in government, having served 20 years in the Virginia Legislature. His keen interest in education is evidenced by the fret that he was the chief sponsor of the Community College Act.
“In my judgment, French Slaughter would make an excellent congressman and one in whom our Seventh Congressional District could take pride,” Byrd concluded.
Byrd, a resident of the Seventh District, served 36 years in public office, including 17 years in the United States Senate. He was elected seven times as a Democrat and twice as an Independent.
Slaughter is a Culpeper attorney.
