Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors spent more than an hour and a half in executive session during their regular meeting October 1. The reason: Three issues, each involving potential litigation, had to be resolved.
Upon reconvening in public session, the supervisors made three announcements; all were aimed at reducing the risk of litigation. The announcements:
• Appropriate $8,000 for animal shelter. As a temporary measure aimed to show the board is serious about complying with state animalshelter laws, the board authorized supervisors Hubert Gilkey III and Nelson Lane to spend $8,000 to upgrade shelter facilities on the property of Animal Warden Jack Bruce.
The board received October 1 a petition filed in circuit court by by Harry F. Bosen, Jr., of Salem, Va. Bosen serves as counsel for the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies.
The petition, which later may lead to a writ of mandamus issued by a judge, requires the board to respond within 21 days with its plan to comply with state animal-welfare laws.
