have volunteer training sessions at Kettunen every weekend, except for holidays, and they have programs that volunteers can go to,” said Vickers. “We toured an earth house that the director of the center lives in, and were told that last winter only seven cords of wood had to be burned, so the house is extremely energy efficient. ”
Before leaving Michigan, the group went to Manistique to hear about substance abuse prevention and the self-esteem enhancement programming in the schools. “4-H members dress up as characters, like a 4-H care bear, and work with children on how they feel about themselves,” Vickers said. ‘They’ve found it to be effective because a child will open up more to the character than they would to the person without the suit.”
The next state the group visited was Wisconsin where they went to the Milwaukee Zoo. The group learned about special 4-H programming at the zoo and the Nature Center.
The group then went to Indiana, and to Kentucky on the way back to Virginia. “It was so exciting to see all of the different things, and to compare notes,” Vickers said. “We had to do group reports on a topic, an individual report daily, and a unit report on what goals we wanted to achieve.”
Since her return, Vickers has been working on incorporating the ideas from the trip into the county programs. “I’ve already gone down and picked up a care bear pattern,” she said.
