Farmers Paid To Help Clout Bay
Fauquier farmers this month will get more money than any of their counterparts in other jurisdictions as part of Virginia’s program to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.
One of 66 participating counties, Fauquier will receive $12,000 from the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Commission’s program to reduce agricultural pollutants in the bay by implementing better farm management practices.
Farmers who sign up to use practices, such as winter cover crops or grass waterways, receive financial assistance from the state while they conserve their land and water and help clean up the bay.
The next phase of the three-year, $2.6 million state program is even more encouraging, said Distrct Conservationist J. Harry Jones, who predicted that Fauquier farmers would receive $26,000 for 1966 farm practices.
