Begins
Wakefield School’s girls’ hockey team, the Hooters, traveled to Hagerstown, Md. for its first match of the season on September 26. Wakefield played St James, a team that in the past years has proved to be the Hooters toughest opponent.
Under the guidance of new hockey coach Miss Barbara Todd, the Hooters have developed strong stick skills and a firm grasp of the finer points of hockey.
While overall play was strong against St. James, Wakefield’s defense eras weak in spots. St. James quickly scored two goals, putting Wakefield on the immediate defensive.
After half time, the Hooters quickly tied the score. Center forward Annie Dunning earned two dean goals, and the Hooters were back in the game. The sane remained even at 2-2 throughout most of the second half, but near the end of the game St. James sewed two successive goals.
Although Wakefield strived to catch up, the St. James defense held strong, and the game ended in a 4-2 St. James victory.
While the team is disappointed by its loss, the Hooters gained valuable experience on the St. James field and they are looking forward to their next match.
