Mondale and his running mate have stated that our defense buildup of the past nearly four years has brought our country closer to war. If their claims are correct, they fly in the face of humanity’s accumulated wisdom: “If you want peace, prepare for war.” “Speak softly and carry a big stick. ”
Such sayings and the experience behind them are familiar to every American. Their meaning is simple: An aggressor prefers a weak, helpless victim. Hitler started World War II because he knew his opponents were not ready militarily and he suspected they had little will to fight.
There can’t be many people anywhere on earth who honestly believe America’s military strength exists for any reason except defense. Look again at history: The Philippines wanted freedom from America and got it, without a fight. Most territory taken by American arms in World War II is back in its former owners’ hands, peacefully.
Contrast: Eastern Europe remains in the grip of Soviet power; efforts to break free by East Germans, Hungarians, Czechs and Poles have been smashed by Soviet armies. Still doubtful? Communist borders are built to keep their own citizens in, not foreigners out. The flow of refugees is virtually a one-way street, toward the democracies, away from the MarxistLeninists.
In their understanding of the need for a strong defense and what it does for America’s safety, and ability to avoid war, President Reagan and Mr. Mondale differ, Mr. Mondale, quoted February 17 in the Washington Times said. “I can’t understand—it just baffles me—why the Soviets these last few years have behaved aa they have.”
Mr. Reagan, fortunately, is not baffled. He understands. Our experience and common sense tell us that the President’s is the correct view: The need for a strong American defense is real. For that alone, he and other Republican candidates on the November ballot, Senator John Warner, and French Slaughter, deserve the support of Rappahannock County’s voters.
