The Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Chib has been in existence since 1979. Hie leaden for this club include myself, Toni and Randall Updike, and David Thornhill. All the parents of the children in this club also act as leaden. The Livestock Chib could never be such a success if it wasn’t for the hard work of the parents.
The 4-H’ers take part in a show every year at Culpeper. The Farm Show is the big highlight for the 4H’ers, The show begins on a Wednesday with the admittance of animals.
Hie swine show is usually Thursday night, the sheep show is on Friday afternoon, followed by the beef show. There is a greased pig chase on Saturday evening, and a tractor pull on Sunday.
The show winds down with a BBQ on Monday evening followed by the sale begiiming at 7:30 Monday night. At this time all market animals are sold.
Most of the 4-H’ers in this club purchase their animals in April and sell them in July. This way the 4-H’era do not have to worry with the upkeep through the winter, and almost anyone can participate and keep an animal for four months.
The exception to this is the beef project which has to be kept year round. This year will be the first year that we will be participating in the beef
