Despite the extra time involved in getting new teachers acquainted with their jobs, Piper does not think that a high number of teachers entering the system harms the quality of education in any way. “It didn’t in 1980-81 when we had 17 neu teachers here, and some of our finest teachers came out of that group.”
She said that teacher turnover rates seem to go in cycles. “The reasons I heard from leaving teachers this year were that they needed more money or more fringe benefits, they wanted to get closer to their homes, they were going back to school or changing to a different field in the teaching profession, and one was expecting a child,” Piper said.
