“No, Panda, I never did marry. As a small child my parents said I had to have an operation which meant I could not have children. I don’t know what my ‘problem’ was. However, in my very early years I was introduced to an older gentleman who also never married. We had a very platonic relationship. I think he was intrigued by me at times. We had some lovely times together after a rather rough start for him as he was not used to a vivacious, lively lass that I was. We would sun ourselves or just sit under the shade of an old pear tree. Our quarters were adjacent to each other and on cold evenings he would come over to my place as his place had deteriorated and become drafty.
“Sadly, our relationship came to an end rather abruptly as my old friend and companion died.
“My family missed him terribly and I was very sad as he had been very wise and very kind to me. I learned a lot from Oliver, or ‘Ollie,’ as I nicknamed him. But oh, dear Panda, enough said about my love life, how about you? Are you married? Any children?”
“Darling Dolly, do I have a story to tell you. I have been married a couple of times and had some illicit liaisons with gentlemen that come through the farm on occasion.
“My first husband, Spiro, died at an early age right here on the farm under some rather mysterious circumstances.
“My second husband, Niro, is still around. He is good-natured and a steady influence, a strong and now confident fellow. I have had some affairs, the details of which it’s best I not go into.
“And, oh yes, I have had lots of children by my first husband and by the others. The children are scattered all over the county except Noble, who I was allowed to keep, and Freddy, who was not much to brag about and who lives next door.
“Having all those kids has taken its toll, believe me! It seems the old saying, ‘keep them barefoot and pregnant’ was meant for me. Maybe that’s why I don’t look as well-preserved as you, Dolly.
“But, dear Dolly, tell me about your life in the city. Is it full of bright lights, lots of people, lots of adventure?”

holds festival
The Town of Orange plans to holds its 11th annual street festival on Main Street September 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The festival this year features about 130 booths set up by artisans and Jta people throughout the eastern part of the country.
In addition, other activities are planned. The James Madison Museum will be open for visitors and the nearby home of the fourth president, Montpelier, will be open for grounds tours for a fee.
