Council
adopts
historic
district

A historic district ordinance designed to protect the style and general character of Washington was passed by the town council at its regular monthly meeting August 14.
The ordinance establishes an Architectural Review Board that will review plans for changes to existing buildings requiring a building permit and for new buildings in town.
The ARB will compare the exterior style, design, texture, material and color of buildings predominate in the town during two time periods with plans for changes or new construction.
The town was divided into two sections.
Area B comprises “those properties abutting Mt. Salem Avenue in its entirety and ail parcels on the south side of Business Rt. 211 and east of the lots designated as 119 and 115 on the Rappahannock County tax map for the town of Washington,” according to the ordinance.
Properties 119 and 115 are now occupied by the Black Kettle Restaurant and Motel and Avon Hall. Buildings in Area B will be compared to architectural stvles from the town’s settlement to 1945.
