Teachers
can’t answer it now\
But I think I have a clue.
In the 10th grade, I was guaranteed a “B” in English, even if I never opened the book, which happened on more than one occasion.
The teacher, who was also the adviser to the school’s newspapers and one of the great raunchy joke tellers of all time, became a friend. I learned a lot from that teacher. Very little of that knowledge was of significant worth inside the classroom, however.
My ninth grade teacher broke down and cried in front of the class the day he told us he was leaving the honorable profession go to New York City and try to make a career of acting.
That same year, my science teacher tried to have me expelled and nearly became the first teacher to flunk me. He was the teacher who once said to me, “wise guys end up sidewise.” Or in the newspaper business, I think.
A year later, my band instructor threatened to throw me out of marching band because I didn’t raise my knees high enough during marching practice. I almost begged him to do me the favor and throw me out.
The thing is, you just can’t tell about teachers, much the same way you can’t tell about students. The public school system in
