‘Sugar Cane Alley’
The Rappahannock Association lor the Arts and the Community will present “Sugar Cane Alley” on August 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gay St. Theatre.
“Sugar Cane Alley” is a highly praised film by a new writer-director. Euzhan Palcy, whose work has captivated filmmakers and critics alike. Set in Martinique in the 1930s, “Sugar Cane Alley” is the story of 11-year-old Jose and his grandmother, Mian Tine, a cane-cutter, who wants her grandson to complete his education and find a better life.
Cadenat and Legitimus (both West Indians) are extraordinary in their roles. Though filmed in 1983, this movie just opened in D.C. this spring and RAAC is pleased to have it this soon. “The work of a world class filmmaker and it is to be seen and savored.” Andrew Sarris, The Village Voice. The film is French with subtitles and is rated PG.
Jenkins reunion
The annual reunion for the relatives and friends of the late Luther E. and Ada F. Jenkins will be held at the picnic area of Graves Mountain Lodge, Syria, on August 25 from 10 a.m. until dark.
All those attending are asked to bring a picnic lunch, which will be served at 1 p.m.
