State crackdown
on truck width
A “unified and concerted effort” is being staged to bring trucks within the state into compliance with regulations, the Virginia Highway Department has announced.
“The problem was first brought to our attention earlier this year in Southwest Virginia,” said Col. R. L. Suthard of the Virginia State Police. “A number of trucks used for transporting coal were found to be wider than the allowable 96 inches (the limit under state code) for reasons ranging anywhere from overextended mud flaps to oversize tires.”
However, Suthard said other trucks were also found to be in violation of the width requirement.
The Department of Motor Vehicles will not issue registrations and the highway department will not issue hauling permits to trucks in violation.
State police will begin immediately to take “appropriate enforcement action,” according to the state police officials.

Anyone planning to retire before age 65 should apply for monthly social security benefits no later than the last day of the month those benefits are to begin.
“Benefits payable for months before 65 can begin no earlier than the month the person applies,” said Bruce R. Hundley, manager of the Culpeper Social Security office.
“In general, a person who applies for benefits after reaching 66 can get back payments up to six months before the month he or she applied. However, the person can apply up to three months before the month he or she wants to benefits to start.”
